A brilliant book on a brilliant man living in exciting and important times. It is a good biography of a man. But it is more than that as it is a picture of a pivotal time in US History. It documents the American Civil war, the decisions that led up to it and gives us a glimpse into the minds of those fighting it. It portrays a man endlessly balancing egos. Anyone interested in American history should read this book
